Antimicrobial
Biocides or antimicrobial additives protect plastics from microorganisms like bacteria, algae, fungi and mould. Generally two possible application fields are mentioned:
- Biocides can be used to protect the polymer surface itself e.g. from staining and degradation caused by microorganisms.
- Biocides can be used to give a hygienic and health benefit by controlling/decreasing the amount of microorganisms at the polymer surface.
A complete range of biocides exist, both organic and non-organic (primarily silver-based). Generally end use applications range from construction products, consumer/household goods, up to medical/healthcare applications.
